Not all providers have the training needed to appropriately assess and educate parents and patients on airway disorders, AND THAT IS OKAY.

Does your dental office provide salivary testing options?

💧 In addition to the age-old assessments of pocket depths, bleeding points, and radiographic bone levels, salivary testing provides valuable insight into the subclinical disease parameters occurring for each patient.

Use of these in-office and at-home screening tests for early detection of oral diseases is quickly becoming the new standard of care in dentistry.

🔎 Early identification allows for less long-term damage to the supporting structures of teeth and helps prevent adverse systemic side effects.

Our six-week-old daughter has sleep apnea.

👶 Her official diagnosis is laryngomalacia ➡️ the cartilage in her neck isn't strong enough and colapses with breathing, specifically inhaling, when awake and asleep.

🍼 Her symptoms include stridor (noisy breathing), aerophagia-induced acid reflux, several choking episodes during feedings (both nursing and bottle), very poor sleep efficiency (43%), and generalize irritability from chronic fatigue and labored breathing.

‼️ Here's my reminder that colic isn't a diagnosis. It's a symptom.

In the coming days, we will decide the next steps for treatment, which will likely include surgery.

Airway health is multifactorial, and it requires several areas of healthcare specialties for comprehensive care.

🏥 Our interdisciplinary team of providers has so far included our pediatrician, ENTs, and feeding therapist, and craniosacral work. We will eventually add an airway dentist for a frenuloplasty.

I'm grateful to have extensive training in airway health as I feel it's allowed us to have quicker diagnosis and treatment for our baby. I'm am sharing our experience to give others the same chance of earlier intervention.
